When was the Park founded? |
In 1909 the park was a popular tourist spot. In 1932 the park was purchased and made into a national park. By 1934, the park officially opened with Franklin D. Roosevelt there at the opening ceremony. Now the park is protected by the NPS. They protect the environment of the Great Smoky Mountains. |
Brief history |
The Great Smoky Mountains are one of the highest peaks in the Appalachian mountains. The first settlers in this area was the Cherokee tribe. The Cherokee was a sophisticated agricultural way of life. This was all ruined when the first european settlers came through the Great Smoky Mountains in 1540. Eventually the Cherokee and the europeans made peace. |
